The service began as 'Foodiebay', conceptualised in the cafeteria of Bain & Company - it was designed to save time in scanning menu for the food available for the busy consultants.  

With a vision to help people discover great eating joints around them, the online service caters to more than 80 million foodies across the globe monthly, operating in 23 countries worldwide, including India, Australia and the United States. Zomato lists various restaurants by uploading detailed scanned menus and photos sourced by local street teams. They further capture user comments, reviews and ratings to make the information more meaningful. Zomato has a huge database of over 1 million restaurants with 30 million photos, 10 million reviews and 18 million bookmarks. 

Apart from the restaurant search, Zomato expanded their offering base to online food-ordering and table reservations. However, more than 90% of their revenues still come from advertising revenues, though this number is slowly reducing with other services gaining traction. Zomato also provides for cashless payment options and has launched white-label apps. With the acquisition Delhi-based startup MapleGraph that built MaplePOS, a cloud-based point-of-sale product for restaurants, Zomato now offers a point-of-sale system for restaurants as well in the name of ‘Zomato Base’.

In May 2012, in collaboration with Citibank, Zomato launched a print version of the website as 'Citibank Zomato Restaurant Guide'. However, as the database kept expanding geometrically with their first overseas foray to UAE in September 2012, the print version was discontinued in subsequent years.

Infoedge, the parent company of Naukri.com group, controls 47% of the stake in Zomato with other key investors being Sequoia capital, Vy capital and Temasek. Zomato has raised a total of ~$225 million through these investors in multiple funding rounds. This capital fuelled their global expansion through acquisitions.

Zomato clocked total overall revenues of Rs. 185 Crores for FY16, with India accounting for 47.3% of the revenues. However, their net loss also mounted to a total of Rs. 574.5 Crores primarily on account of US and other recent locations they have ventured into.

As per the rankings released by StartupRanking on 21 March 2016, Zomato ranks as the top 2 startup for India.
